Devon County Council and North Devon Council are proposing that an incinerator costing an estimated £39.3 million should be sited on Severn Brethren, Barnstaple. The incinerator would be capable of burning more than 90 per cent of our non-recyclable household rubbish which is currently taken to the landfill site at Deepmoor, Near Torrington. We shall still be recycling what we do at present and indeed more as the years progress.

Fears have been raised over the possibility of toxic fumes being from the burning of rubbish. However, others have pointed to how the site would help reduce the communities’ reliance on fossil fuels and help the environment by disposing of non-recyclable rubbish efficiently.

This is a sensitive subject and we must all be wise to undertake our own research and comment to sift the rhetoric from the fact before arriving at a conclusion !
